MtBkrBob and myself did a short mtb ride from 421 towards the Stree campground Saturday morning. We were on trail shortly after eight, and still met two atvr's before we went too far. (By noon, it's a highway.)
As the sheltowee enters Hooten Holler (going south) there is a short 1/2-3/4 mile hike down a closed usfs (gravel) access road, then you turn left off the gravel back onto the trail. Then the trail crosses Hooten proper, and then there is a steep/long climb back up to the ridgeline going towards Stree campground. There is also a fork (going left) that runs out behind Hooten Old Town, then on out onto hwy89. The sheltowee goes trail right, up the hill. The wrong trail goes straight (or slightly left) and stays level. The area around the the junction usually stays muddy from atv useage too. This is a easy turn to miss going south. We need a marker here.
Going south, keep an eye out. If you see any barbed wire fence in Hooten, you're going the wrong way! |
