Holly Bay Campground
Miles: 14.1
Later in day we learn a tornado hit eastern towns, ripping rooves off of buildings and knocking power out. Nevertheless we stayed pretty dry in hemlock campsite. By Star Creek shelter, we saw our first fellow hikers and I fired up the alcohol stove just in time to cook and pack back up before a sudden storm sending down hail and sheets of rain came roaring through the dark cloud mass. The torrent lasted only a short time and the sun came through. Peculiar and potentially hazardous crossing of Bark Creek after shelter requiring a hop of large boulders and slippery footing then bushwhacking to find trail on other side. Wound past Mouth of Laurel boat ramp and away from Cumberland River to Laurel River Lake with dark green water. Arrived to Holly Bay campground with impending rain and no dry cover after power out at dismal marina store. Camping behind the bath house as it's locked, otherwise we'd be camping in the bathroom for want of dry place. |
