Mapping the Sheltowee

I posted a few pics from one of my dog's first overnighter this past May on the Moonbow Trail section of the STT:

The pics are from where we camped along the Cumberland River, where Dog Slaughter Creek enters the river on the downstream bank. (Mile 200, N36° 51.623', W84° 18.836') My dog Clyde was so tired he fell asleep on the fire ring, knocking over his food. He cleaned up after a little rest.

Great photos!

3 of us were there today...at that very spot. First time for me. Fantastic place and falls every where. We camped at next campsite south on the Sheltowee. You'll see our pictures here soon!

I love boxers! A friend of mine has one and my hound & her's play like mad. How was your dog on trail? This friend would like to hike with her boxer, but she worries she'll give him a heart attack.

That picture isn't cardiac-related is it?

Nice fawn boxer!

I'm Boyd's friend with the boxer. How far can Clyde hike at a time? Jake acts beat after a few miles, but it's Boyd's suspicion that he's faking. Age may also be a factor...how old is Clyde? Jake is 4.

Boyd-- I saw that you were heading down that way so I thought you might recognize the setting. Nice pics! I assume you all shuttled -- where did you park? (Laurel River boat ramp?) BTW the coordinates I posted above for the campsite are approximate. I took my GPS receiver but my batteries were bad, so I determined the coordinates from some Delorme software.

Clyde the boxer recovered fully from his exertions. A short time after his nap he discovered the joys of sand. I probably was trying to tune into that good americana station out of Whitley City, 98.3 I think.

Kimberly-- Clyde is a little over two but sounds a lot like Jake. After a few miles on this trip, he slowed waayyy down. We did around 7 miles the first day and less the second. Unless your dog's been diagnosed with a heart condition, and assuming he's fit, I wouldn't worry about it. I previously had another male boxer who developed a heart condition at around nine and 1/2 years old but he was very active up until then.

Two weekends ago, I took Clyde and my other dog, 10-month old Bonnie, down to BSF (Bonnie's first overnigher). Two dogs are a handful, especially since I don't trust them enough to be off leash a lot. But Bonnie actually helped pick up Clyde's pace. I had them on a double lead, and Bonnie would set a brisk pace, pulling Clyde along with her. I sort of felt like I was mushing dog sled team at times.

John, I love that station out of Whitley City, and I listen to whenever I get into the Big South Fork area. When I drive from from Lex to Stearns the dark period for radio is in Somerset, but as soon as I get into McCreary County...

The trip last weekend was thus: I parked at KY-700 and STT and hiked to Cumberland Falls. There I met 2 backpacking partners, Edgar Pouppin and Csargent. We hiked up to Dog Slaughter and camped. We came back the next day to the park. During that trip we explored water falls and climbed (illegaly i'm sure) Pinnacle Knob fire tower. We probably did 8 miles together.

Thanks for the info on Clyde. I'll feel much more comfortable hiking Jake now. I probably wouldn't let him off the leash either, as he is prone to chasing small animals (particularly my cat).

Maybe we'll meet you and Clyde on the trail sometime!
