The STA is looking at organizing an event that would be for backpacking types that would be over a set period of time over a set distance. It would be a timed event. Participants would be required to carry a set minimum weight with set essential gear.

Example - Start on a Saturday at 6:00 am Event Ends on Sunday at 6:00 pm.

Distance - say 70 miles over the time period and if you do not arrive by 6:00 pm you are out.

So how many miles can you hike in a 36 hour Challenge? 75 miles? 50 miles?

Super idea!

What would the minimum weight be? My max would be 50 miles I think.

I would love to do this! I would say a weight min/max, any drops and issues like that be standardized. It would be great to do a few supply drops so it could be ultralight and just see how far folks could get.

The STA is in the planning stages to host a 36 Hour Backpacking Challenge. The idea is, participants will have to cover a set distance in 36 hours. Those that fail to get across the end point are eliminated from the Challenge.

The fastest time is the Challenge winner. There would be an overall champ and divisional champs like womens, men, seniors etc....

Here is a link to a short survey to give us some feedback on how much weight should be carried at the start, how many miles you might hike in 36 hours etc... We value your opinions and appreciate your support. The Challenge most likely would be in the late fall.

I think this is a great idea. I'd definitely be up for the challenge. Looking forward to seeing more info on this.
