In the news in Lexington, recently, word that the Judge Ex down in Powell county is attempting to reopen the old Narrows Road off Bend Rd. down to Natural Bridge. This road was closed in 2006 by the Forest Service because of overuse and damage to the trail and the road and the arch.

At the suggestion of Jeff Dozier, an OHV advocate, the argument is that the road was never officially closed by a vote of the fiscal court so it is therefore still open and should be available for OHV use.

On the surface an interesting argument. But, the road on the 37 and 57 that is 1937 and 57 maps is labeled primitive road and later disappeared from all maps possibly before laws were passed on how a county can close a road.

Stay tuned. The Forest Service, the State Parks, State Nature Preserve and other lawyers are looking into the claim. The Forest Service is in contact with the Judge in Powell County and they are working the issue.

The STA's position is that while we support the development of trails for all eligible users through the established trail management and development process we do not support the reopening of the Narrows Road for OHV traffic at this time since this road is the primary route of the Sheltowee Trace in this area, and in previous years use was unmanageable, damage was significant to the arch there and to the road tread.
