This thread came up when I typed in GPS Sheltowee Trace. I'm trying to find out if my GPS on my phone will work when I'm on the trail. I've been hiking at National parks during other vacations and discovered that my GPS didn't get signal on the trails. The way it's looking is I'm going to have to navigate the old fashioned way during my vacation. With a few maps and my trusty compass this summer. _________________ I enjoy finding natural growing kratom during my hikes. They always produce seeds to store in my survival seed bank supplies. |

GPS will be hit or miss. If you are doing the Sheltowee the compass is not necessary. _________________ Check us out at sheltoweetrace.twitter.com and on facebook in the hiking groups under The Sheltowee Trace. I agree with Traildust. Gps on the trail seems to be hit and miss. May be better in the winter and a bit more unreliable during the summer form what I have seen. |

The problem with the phone is that they mostly don't use real "GPS" systems but instead rely on a cell phone signal triangulation method. As it is a positioning system, this method does not rely on satellites which are always present (although sometimes poorly acquired because of overhead cover) but on signal towers. Since most backcountry hiking is out of cell phone signal range your cell phone will usually prove to be fairly useless. And on a side note, while it continuously searches for a signal the battery life with seriously suffer and you will quickly end up with no gps and a dead cell phone. |

Compass on the Sheltowee Trace may be overkill. Get our trailguide and map and you will be ok.... _________________ Check us out at sheltoweetrace.twitter.com and on facebook in the hiking groups under The Sheltowee Trace. I have read somewhere that it is a primitive area for overnight horse camping with vault toilets, watering trough, horse trailer parking, picket lines and gravel lot. And that 100 miles of trails meander through the area surrounding Cave Run Lake.

This is a great report. It is a herculean task to climb the Indian Staircase and the circled rim at end of the trail, requires high amount of energy and stamina. Post reports of more trails. Looking forward to it.
