So far we have 26 registered to join the 2013 Hiker Challenge. Yep that is a lot of folks but we know from experience we will loose a few before Jan to schedule conflicts and other issues.

We are considering a second group starting in January on the last weekend but they would start in the south and come north - they get to be among the first to hike the new 20 mile extension of the Trace.

So if you are interested in joining a group hike on the last weekend of January south to north out of Big South Fork please let us know here or on Facebook or email.

where is the new 20 mile extension of the Trace at?

I would like to do this but unfortunately I can't get off a Friday every month for 11 months.

Ewker,

Reference the Hiker Challenge - Most Friday's this year will not be hiking days but travel days for those who are a distance from the trail head. Most all the hiking in this years Challenge will be on Sat - Sun which is the way it is in January.

The additional miles will move the Southern Terminus down to the Leatherwood Ford trail head below the bridge. The additional miles will utilize existing trails in the Big South Fork like the John Muir and direct users to or through Charit Lodge and Bandy Creek Campground.

The existing Sheltowee into Pickett will remain open for those who want to start over there or want to use that trail for other adventures. The SP and Forest hope to build a series of new trails that will include that section of the Trace.

Traildust, Do you have map of the new route laid out already so folks can mark it on the southern portion map of the ST? Is this new route on the ST website?

If I remember correctly some hikes on Friday were night time hikes?

Ewker,,

We will post the new additional route when we get it blazed next month before Christmas. Working on a jpeg that shows the plan to post for public consumption. BSF National Geographic maps for sale in March will have the route.

Yep last year we did two Friday night hikes but not this year. Friday's will only be used to get folks together when we need an early start. Most likely not until spring when time changes and daylight comes early.

Traildust, Did you get enough folks to do a south to north hike? I would be interested in seeing the trip itinerary if you did.

Just to let folks know, we have 44 hikers signed up for the January Hiker Challenge. Two shuttle buses are standing by for hiker pick up at Perkins Center in Morehead on Saturday, January 19th, two weeks from today.

If you want to go, now is the time to get registered. We have plenty of camping space in the first two months but after that in order to not stress the trail resources we will most likely go to two dates.

Details on registering are on our webpage. www.sheltoweetrace.org

57 have signed up for the 2013 Challenge. We never would have thought but we are working to add leadership and we will move the group down the trail in three teams and camp in three different locations at Holly Fork to minimize the impact on the Forest.

Still time for you to get with the program.

Visit the webpage for details.
