The Sheltowee Trace Association will honor all our volunteers this weekend during our 4th Annual Trail Conference

The 2013 Verne G. Orndorff Meritorious Service Award is presented to John Thompson and Boyd Shearer from Outragegis Mapping. Seeing a need for accurate maps to help users of the Trace, Boyd and John headed out on the Trace to walk and map the entire Trace from end to end. In 2009, they released the first map set covering the southern half of The Trace. An instant best seller for those seeking to head out on the Trace, the maps significantly increased the number of users on the Trace and increased the users confidence in completing their journey.

This year's "Volunteer of the Year" Award will be presented to Robert Pritchard of Morehead, Kentucky. Over the last year Bob has lead all volunteers in the number of hours given to maintaining the Trace. Whether working locally on the Trace or answering the call to travel down state to work on clearing trail Bob has been there to see the task completed. Bob is responsible for leading the Trail Days Crew in clearing miles of trail in the Cave Run area and then traveling down to the Stearns District and clearing several miles of the Trace south of Yamacraw Bridge. In addition to clearing trail, Bob has also volunteered to serve on the STA's trail committee, working to see the Trace extended in the Big South Fork and re-route to a safer section around Morehead.

The STA honors, Scot "Taba" Ward as The 2013 Partnership Awardee. In the first year of the STA's existence, it was critical that we got some kind of manual developed to assist users on the Trace and to reduce the number of incidents of users getting lost or misplaced. Scot answered the call with the devleopment and publication of the Sheltowee Trace Thru-hiker Manual. This contribution not only is a significant fundraising item but also has reduced the number of complaints about directional issues on the Trace to less than 10% of what they were in 2009.

The STA thanks all our volunteers who have helped with Trail Check, trail clearing, bridge building throughout 2012. We are indebted to you all and appreciate your sacrifice of time and talent to The Trace.
