|
|
I'm new to the hiking scene. Today I went hiking from Cumberland Falls to the Star Creek Shelter and back. While at the shelter I saw some people had left some trinkets (zippo, yu-gi-oh card, hotdog forks). Was wondering if it is customary when you stay in a shelter to leave a little something behind?
I had a piece of 550 cord (about 10 feet braided into a cobra knot) so I hung it on a nail just incase somebody needs it. |

Takaaco,
Although its a nice gesture its better to follow the "Pack it in, Pack it out" rule. We had to pack out several bags worth of stuff from the Bark camp shelter last year, mostly trash but some items that someone left for others to use. We passed through that shelter during the challenge hike in March and saw the items you described, we left them there, but no doubt they will eventually get hauled out by a trail maintenance crew some day. |

Please fellow hikers, lets leave nothing behind. Yep we know there are shingles there and they are suppose to be there from the roof replacement project last year.
On the March Hiker Challenge I packed out the old coleman gas bottles that had been there (6 of them I think) so it is better. It is a shelter not a recyle center so folks just need to get in the habit to pack it out if you packed it in. .
See other thread here on planned maintenance work at Starr in May.
