First post here, thought I'd start off with some photos. I posted some of these on Kywilderness.com, but was encouraged by a member of this site to post them here as well. These photos were taken this past weekend on a two-night backpacking trip along the Sheltowee Trace. We hiked from the parking area at KY-192/1193 to Van Hook Falls and then followed the Rockcastle Narrows trail to a campsite along Cane Creek. Lots of ice, but the trail was in pretty good condition. More pictures are available here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mvweth .

Thanks Mark for sharing. Any trouble finding your way along the trail? _________________ Check us out at sheltoweetrace.twitter.com and on facebook in the hiking groups under The Sheltowee Trace. I'd hiked that section of the trail several times before, so we (myself and my girlfriend, Esta) didn't have any trouble. Most of the snow on the trail had melted by the time I got there so it wasn't too muddy either. There was some snow in the shaded areas and on top of any frozen water, it was really scenic.
Along the bases of some of the cliffs close to Van Hook Falls there were sheets of ice covering certain spots on the trail which made it kind of difficult to cross, but with trekking poles it wasn't too bad.
We ran into a couple on our way out that had attempted to hike to the falls but had turned back because of the ice.
I did notice a few of the white-diamond trail blazes nailed to trees that I don't remember being there when I hiked that part of the trail in October, but other than that it was just as I remembered it. |

Awesome pics man... welcome to the site as well. Do you happen to know the approximate mileage in that section? |

This is my first post/reply. I hiked from 192 to VanHook and back yesterday and the falls still had quite a bit of ice on the sides, but the main falls were running fast and gorgeous. Trail was in great condition. According to my etrex, the mileage was 4.2 roundtrip. I got some great pics, but since I'm a dialup person, posting pictures would just be too slow. |
