Hello all,
I'm walking the trail from the Stoney Cove to US460 above Frenchburg in a couple of weeks. Can anyone tell me how much of this section is road walk? I'm really not interested in walking the road so I'll need to arrange a pickup at trails end....
Thanks!

Most of that is section is not road. Look on map's 25 and 26 and you will see most of the road sections which are pretty short. When the trail leaves Ky 1274 you will be walking on maintained gravel road for quite a ways and then it turns in to dirt road and then to a much less maintained gravel road. Then you will hit pavement again for a short ways down to US 460 and then a short walk on US 460 to Ky 77 which is Tarr Ridge Rd. |

Thanks for the reply. I just realized I posted this in the wrong forum!
Would you recommend being picked up on 1274, or is the road walk (gravel, dirt or otherwise) from there to RRG worth the effort? It looks to me on the map that it's almost all road and, from your description, not much trail. _________________ In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. ~John Muir |

I didn't walk all of the section from KY 1274. The first part isn't all that special from what I understand from my sister who walked it las fall. The very last part in the woods, shortly before making it to US 460 had some nice spots on it if you like being in the woods.
I will be hiking from the Triplett creek bridge to KY 1274 in early October. |

Thanks for the info. I'm going to go ahead and walk to US460 at Mariba so I'll at least get a few miles in. I'll post a trip report after my hike so you can see the trail conditions for your hike in Oct.
What about the next section from Mariba to RRG? Looks like a big portion of it goes along route 77. Is it mostly road walk, too? Is there a good spot where it leaves 77 to park a car for a few days? _________________ In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks. ~John Muir |

Its just a few miles down KY 77 (Tarr Ridge Rd) and then you turn left on to Corner Ridge Rd. Follow that somewhere between 1 and 2 miles and the trail goes back into the woods on the right. You should be in the woods for the most part until you get to KY 52. A short walk down KY 52 and you take a left on KY 399 and road walk nearly nine miles to Heidelburg.
Forgot to note that there is a very small parking lot where the trail goes into the woods off of Corner Ridge Rd. |

I have followed the trail down Clifton Branch and turned left on 33 but am having difficulty finding where
the trail leaves 33 and enters the woods traveling north toward Clear Creek. _________________ Tim York |

Tim,
I'm a little confused by the route number 33. From Clifton Creek there is a short road walk west on Ky 1274(Old Beaver Rd). The trail goes off to the right just past a driveway to a red house. I believe the house is red. There is a sign close by that says no parking. You should find a USA recreational trail marker just before the no parking sign. It will be a little off the road. You can try googling KY-1274, Frenchburg Ky. Get on the map and then zoom to the street view. Move west along the road until you see the no parking sign and then pan the view to the right. |

The road number was an error on my part. It is 1274 and not 33. Next time I am near Frenchburg I will attempt to locate the trail marker where the trail enters the woods. It looks like it is about nine miles from this point to Clear Creek. Is this about right? _________________ Tim York |

Around 9 miles sounds right. If you are coming from Frenchburg on 1274 the no parking sign will be on your left and therefore not readable. There are a couple of red and white barns on the right just before you get to the no parking sign. |

I would like to do this as a day hike walking from Clear Creek to Old Beaver Road near Frenchburg. I believe I am in shape to do this. I have walked this much on the Pine Mountain Trail and the AT in a day. Do you know anyone that could provide a shuttle? _________________ Tim York |

I do not have a day picked. My concern is that I may have waited a bit too late with the time changing back to standard time this weekend. How well is this section of trail marked? _________________ Tim York |

Tim this section is well blazed and signed. Expect no directional trouble. _________________ Check us out at sheltoweetrace.twitter.com and on facebook in the hiking groups under The Sheltowee Trace. We don't lose an hour of daylight when we change our clocks to standard time this weekend. We just shift it from evening to morning. The daylight on Sunday is about two minutes less than the daylight on Saturday. _________________ AT 8,400 Miler |
