I recently found this forum and thought I'd share these pics from almost two years ago. We hiked in the ST from corner ridge into the clifty and camped at the bottom near where it Ys into the lost branch.
We hiked in at night and the storm started just as we got to the creek at the bottom. I tell you, I never heard anything like that before. All that sleet coming down on you in the woods at night while wading barefoot through a creek and scrambling to set up camp is a sensory experience I'll never forget.
We woke up the next morning with about 6 inches of sleet and snow. Too bad I also blew out my left ACL that weekend. Its fixed now and ever since I've been trying to time another trip for a good snow. I LOVE IT!!
my homemeade underquilt needs some improvement, but works well if I stuff all my extra clothes under there

I stayed warm, never woke up once from the cold.
The underquilt has a layer of foam and an emergency blanket sewn into it
the Mosuito Hammock has two layers of material under you for stuffing insulation between:
A closed cell pad with soft egg crate side facing up.
then another open cell pad
all extra clothes stuffed under me
North face cats meow bag
fleece liner bag
plus wearing double socks, full thermals, and full balaclava through the night.
I don't think its humanly possible to be any "cozy-er"
My breath even condensated and froze to my sleeping bag all around my face when I woke up - good times indeed |

I remember camping in similar conditions in my much younger days. Not sure I would want to do it now that I'm old and creaky in all moving parts . I do have to admit though it is beautiful being outdoors in the snow. Really enjoyed your photos. |
