Boyd,
Recently you mentioned on a post that one of the river crossings near Yamacraw may be potentially hazardous. You recommended an alternative route. Could you explain this to me?
Also, I hiked the rainbow trail portion north of Cumberland Falls two winters ago and the bridge (I believe its Bear Camp Creek?) was out. The water level was down so I had an easy crossing. Should I anticipate problems with crossing this in the summer?
I'm not a swimmer so advice will be much appreciated.
Thirdly, recently I did some recon on the ST where it crosses Highway 27. There used to be a marker there but I could not find it last time on the western side. Can you give me a landmark close-by to look out for? I'm not a GPS user so landmarks help.
Thanks again for your awesome website! |

Welcome hikerpariah.
The biggest ford on the Sheltowee is the Rock Creek ford above Yamacraw.
Bark Camp Creek north of Cumberland Falls is still without a bridge I believe, but there's a rope that helps with a dry scramble across some boulders. Do you remeber that? I think the biggest worry with Bark Camp is slipping on a boulder and cracking the melon or snapping an appendage.
Did you park at the ST trailhead on US 27? From there you hike north on the east side of US 27. You'll pass some powerlines, hit a gravel road, and come out by a church. Cross US 27 and train tracks and then hope you stay on the right atv/jeep trail network until you drop down into the Big South. Trail signage is poor, but it exists last time I did it, and if you print http://www.sheltoweetrace.com/maps/5.pdf you should find your way.

This bridge is still out, I slipped and fell after crossing the creek going over a tree that was down over the trail. Boy was that fun.... _________________ He who panics first, lives to tell about it... |
