I'm new to the site and just wanted to say I live at Greeley, Ky on the Hwy 1036 section of the trail just south of Natural Bridge. I see backpackers pass by from time to time and might be of some help to someone.

Welcome. I might hit you up for a place to park sometime. And should you need any assistance around the trail in Jackson county, just let me know.

The route goes through the middle of my property, so I could give you a parking spot in sight of the "Turtle"

Oh my. A bigger thanks for permitting the Sheltowee Trace to cross your property. We definitely need to come visit.

Steve

Well, I should rephrase, the trail is the highway at this location and the highway(1036) runs through my property. Sorry my first statement was probably misleading. I noticed the new trail markers a couple of years ago on the roadside trees and see a few hikers now and again, mostly spring and fall. None the less, I could probably be of some help in providing a parking spot, water, directions ,etc. I read in a post about parking on the Big Bend Ridge south of Natural Bridge and wouldn't recommend it for any length of time!

No apology needed. Thanks for the recommendation on car parking.

Hi Greeley Farmer,

Welcome and thanks for volunteering!

About the parking situation, I'm hiking from Natural Bridge this weekend, and was planning on leaving my car at a pull off on Rt. 11 on what looks like Sterling road, but is now closed off. From scouting it out and maps I've seen, it looks like it comes out right where the trail joins up on Big Bend road. My plan was to walk down Rt 11 to Natural Bridge, follow the Trace south to Big Bend, cross over it to the remnants of Sterling road, back to my car and make a loop out of it. Any thoughts? Bad idea?

I may have a partner that will have another car we can use, in which case I was think of leaving one at the Church on the corner of Big Bend and Rt 1036. Would that be a possibility? I would gladly get permission if I knew who to ask. It's likely I'll be on my own, though.

Thanks,
Jeff

I've never heard it called Sterling Road but guessing it is a place off 11 where the FS piled up dirt and put up foot travel only signs , there is the remains of an old bridge behind it crossing the Md Fk Red River. I haven't been in there for several years but it sounds like a plan. Might be easier to park at the NB lodge and start the hike at the sterling road and go the route you stated back to NB. Coming from NB it might be hard to find the Sterling road turnoff, alot of old oldfield roads in there, just a thought. You could probably park at the Standing Rock church but I would ask. PM me and I can give you the preachers name and number. I hope this helps
